Different symptoms.
Different questions.
Explore the concerns we discuss. These panels explain the assessment; they do not diagnose a condition.
Pain needs a diagnosis.
Pain near the ear or chewing muscles can have different causes. I assess the history and jaw function and check for dental or other sources of pain.
A sound alone is not a diagnosis.
Painless clicking is common and often needs no treatment. Pain, locking or reduced movement changes the assessment.
Protect teeth. Assess the pain.
Clenching or grinding may be relevant, but tooth wear alone does not explain every painful jaw. A protective guard and a pain-management plan have different aims.
Restricted movement deserves assessment.
A jaw that repeatedly catches or locks needs clinical review. If it stays locked or you cannot eat or drink, seek urgent care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
The right starting point
is a careful assessment.
TMJ is the joint. TMD is a group of disorders affecting jaw joints, muscles and function.
Your story
Where it hurts, when it began, triggers, sleep, habits and previous treatment.
Examination
Assess jaw movement and tenderness; check teeth and other possible sources.
Selected records
Imaging is considered when it can answer a clinical question—not automatically.
A care plan
Discuss conservative options, the role of a splint and referral when appropriate.
Different splints.
A clear reason for each.
I select and adjust the appliance for its intended purpose, rather than giving every painful jaw the same guard.
A planned biting surface
A custom stabilisation splint may be considered in selected cases, with its contacts and fit checked clinically.
Guard vulnerable teeth
A protective appliance may be used when clenching or grinding threatens teeth. Protection and pain relief are different treatment aims.
Match the diagnosis
Where another splint design is indicated, I explain its purpose, wear instructions and review plan before fitting.
A splint is a monitored option, not a guaranteed cure. Care may also involve habit management, guided exercises or referral. Appliances should not be used to create permanent bite changes as a routine treatment for TMD.
The review matters
as much as the fitting.
Your response determines the next step.
What we monitor
- Pain pattern and daily function.
- Opening, comfort and episodes of locking.
- Appliance fit, tooth contacts and any new symptoms.
What to bring
- Your current splint, if you have one.
- Previous scans or reports, if available.
- A short note of symptoms and previous treatment.
Seek urgent care for a jaw that stays locked or inability to eat or drink. New visual symptoms or a severe new headache require urgent medical assessment.
Before you
decide.
What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?
TMJ means the jaw joint. TMD refers to a group of conditions involving the jaw joints, chewing muscles or related pain and function.
Do all jaw clicks need treatment?
No. Clicking without pain or functional difficulty is common and often needs no treatment. Painful clicking, locking or restricted opening warrants assessment.
Will a splint cure my TMJ pain?
A splint may be considered for selected patients, but pain relief is not guaranteed and the evidence is limited. It is reviewed alongside education, habit management and other appropriate care.
What if my splint makes the pain worse?
Stop using it and contact the treating clinician. The fit, symptoms and treatment plan need review; do not adjust the appliance yourself.
Do I need braces to treat TMJ pain?
Orthodontic treatment is not prescribed simply as a cure for TMD. A separate bite problem may need orthodontic care, with its aims discussed separately from pain management.
What does a TMJ assessment or splint cost?
Fees depend on the assessment and whether records, a custom splint or further care are indicated. We explain the proposed costs before proceeding.
How long will I need to wear a splint?
The wear schedule and review interval depend on the appliance and diagnosis. Treatment is monitored and adjusted according to symptoms, comfort and function.
